Injectables 101: Comparing Dysport and Botox

When deciding between Dysport and Botox injections for your skin, it’s important to know exactly what their similarities and differences are. Comparing Dysport and Botox reveals that they’re more similar than different. However, a few key distinctions could make all the difference for you in the decision making process.

First things first. . .

There’s some confusion with the brand names used versus the injections used. Let’s clear any confusion up before we begin—“Botox” is commonly used as a name for a group of injections. This is similar to the great debate of whether you say “Kleenex” or “facial tissues.” Botox (a specific brand name) has become synonymous with botulinum toxin injections. Both Dysport and Botox use botulinum toxin type A. To learn which of these two treatments may be right for you, read on.

What they have in common:

Dysport and Botox’s similarities start with their common injections. They both prevent and treat wrinkles through neurotoxins that block muscle contractions. Wrinkles are smoothed out because the muscles underneath them relax and still.

The processes of both treatments are similar: they’re quick, noninvasive, and you can return to normal activities after the appointment. They both require follow-up treatments, though the frequency of these depend on which option you choose.

What makes Dysport unique:

Dysport focuses on laugh lines, worry lines, fine lines, neck lines, and glabellar lines. Specifically, Dysport is used for moderate to severe cases of glabella wrinkles (the wrinkles between eyebrows). At a consultation appointment, your aesthetic injector will identify if your glabella wrinkles are mild, moderate or severe and lead you down the right treatment path accordingly.

You’ll start to see results from Dysport within a day or two of treatment. The results last for around three or four months. For sustained results, continued treatments every few months are needed.

What makes Botox special:

Botox treatments are similar to Dysport because they are non-invasive and quick treatments. Botox focuses on laugh lines, worry lines, neck lines, and crow’s feet. After injections, you’ll see a difference in about two weeks. These results take a little bit longer to emerge (compared to Dysport). However, Botox injection results have the possibility of lasting more than six months. Generally, around a few months of strong results are expected but longer results are possible.
